Oh, I shouldn't jump into this discussion, but ...
My understanding is that downtown ("business style") hotels are
cheaper on weekends, presumably because there are fewer business
travellers staying on weekends. And there is likely less demand
for hotel meeting rooms on weekends.
LISA is primarily a "during a normal business week" conference.

I might suggest that comparing Los Angeles airport hotel rates on the
weekend to downtown Boston rates at mid-week is perhaps not the most
useful of comparisons.
If one accepts that LISA should be held downtown, in pedestrian friendly,
appealing cities, in comfortable (i.e. "upscale") hotels, during the
business week, it's only fair to compare room rates to similar venues
and timeframes. Otherwise I might expect that the conversation might
not be very productive.
