I've asked for explanation of how it helps and none has been forthcoming.

I've seen those contracts, I don't need to imagine.

Yes, of course.  But if you can't attend because the total cost of the 
convention (~$4k when I last attended) is greater than your budget for 
conferences…  I would certainly never be able to attend out of my own pocket.  
I go to like seven scifi conventions a year, and I don't spend that much on all 
seven!!
