The important point here is that staying in the conference hotel helps the host organization and helping the organization is noble, good, and makes puppies happy.
Not to put too fine a point on it but... Organizations get the space for "free" or discounted but only if they agree to fill a certain number of rooms. If the "room block" isn't met, the space is no longer free. That would be a shock to the organization bigger than you might imagine. This is true for science fiction conventions, computer conventions, and everything else. (...and since this is a LOPSA mailing list, not a LISA mailing list...) Recently 2 people mentioned to me that by staying at the Hyatt Regency New Brunswick for PICC they got a LOT more out of the conference than if they had stayed with local relatives. Both were in unsolicited email to me. Or that Cascadia IT is March 23-24? www.casitconf.org (PNW) Did I mention that PICC is May 11-12? www.picconf.org (East coast) I don't know if either have a minimum number of rooms they need to book, but if you are in the area, you should attend. It also makes puppies happy.
