I enthusiastically second this. Buy him a book, a server or two (physical server hardware, specs not important, so he can blow it up and reinstall as many times as he wishes without having to bother anyone), some time, and the specific goal of using it for something he is personally interested in. Let him host a personal webpage on it, his own email domain, a personal programming project, whatever. If he (or she) is a good egg who is really interested in the technology and doesn't have too many other personal committments he'll consider you a cool employer and spend whatever work time you allow plus plenty of personal time messing with it and learning. If he's a strict 9 to 5'er who really has to be paid to give a care about this stuff then sign him up for RedHat classes. Ideally, do both. -- Tracy Reed
