Every few months, I go looking around for a solution for this, and every time
(so far) I've found that everything out there was overkill for my needs (OTRS),
to closely tuned to someone else's vision of what they needed to be applicable,
and/or a dead-end product.

I hadn't come across the Asset Tracker plugin for RT, which is a shame.

It also looks like BestPractical is building their own Asset extension for RT,
based off RT 4.2. I think I may take a look at that one, since I've been a
long-time fan of RT in general.

Subject: Re: [lopsa-discuss] Recommendations for basic asset tracking

Peter,
I used the Asset Tracker plugin to Request Tracker for a while until our place
went to School Dude. I am not a fan of that software and it is a giant waste
when the Asset Tracker plugin for RT worked and was free.
Another free thing I used was called Asset Manager written by a guy who worked
for BC Tree Fruit company. I just checked the link and it is dead. The company
is still there but I guess he left or retired. I still use it for my purchase
orders. He gave it out without warranty and said if you use it on the open
internet you best keep it secure. I used it because I sit on a private network
and none of my servers point to the outside so I didn't worry too much. It was
written under the GNU GPL so it is free to distribute. It is much easier to
setup then RT but it is not as extensive. I had to keep track of minimal
equipment. If you are interested I can dig up the code and send it to you.

Hello, folks. I'm looking for a tool to replace the current spreadsheet of IT
assets (servers, switches, end-user machines, etc). I've looked briefly at
openDCIM, but that's serious overkill for us. F/OSS preferred, but commercial
is ok, too.

Any tools the hive mind has liked?

Thanks!
