I used to carry a Sprint USB 3G stick for a long time. I found I rarely had to use it, since most places I went had WiFi, but it did come in handy on some trips. My phone (unlocked, Android,) is on Tmobile and has reasonable coverage in the places I tend to go, so I dropped the Sprint stick and have used the phone w/ tethering when necessary (still very rare). IIRC, tethering isn't available on my plan, but they really can't tell the difference with encrypted traffic so it hasn't been an issue.
