Oh man, that iPad screen hack is tempting. As soon as the iPad 3 came out I
thought to myself that I’d gladly buy one just for use as an external monitor,
if such a thing was possible.

If your end goal is to have a bunch of laptop LCDs on HDMI, you could just get
driver boards with the HDMI built in, something like this:

I've also heard that iPad replacement retina displays are just displayport
screens. This would give a super high resolution, but I don't think there are
any off the shelf breakout boards available.

I've ordered one to see what it can do. If I can get it working the way I
want it to, I might get more of them.
In theory, if this all works, I can build a 9 monitor array all built off of
two ATI 6990's crossfired,9 Lapdock 100's and one 42" TV for a "desktop"
monitor.
The "30.3 inch" 9-monitor array would have a 4096x2304 resolution and would
be beside a 42 inch 1920x1080 LCD.
Since they are $60 each (shipping/taxes in), I can get 9 of these for $540. I
am anticipating another $100 in cables and connectors to make it all work and
maybe another $150 in mounting equipment.
All in, it should be about $800. I'll report back when I get the first one
working.
I'd love to get this all working and then replace the laptop LCD's in the
lapdocks with some higher resolution laptop LCD's from laptop replacements. The
Lapdocks will provide the HDMI to LVDI conversion and power for the monitors. I
will just need to replace the LCD controller and LCD which can be done for
about $26 + LCD. This means I should be able to get 17.1 inch 1920x1080 screens
to plug into the lapdocks for about $90 each. Replacing all 9 of these would
cost another $810 and would bring the overall setup to 5760 x 3240 in a "51.3
inch screen".
$2000 for a > 5760P monitor array seems appealing.
For now, I'll start with $60 and see how it goes.
