Yes, it is. I did compile perl 5.8.6 for my SME6 server. Kevin Walsh sent me the following lines:
You can install from source easily enough. Download the latest Perltar archive from CPAN. You'll find a link to the latest stable versionhere: http://www.cpan.org/src/README.html.
Once you've unpacked the source, type the following:
sh Configure -demakemake testmake install
That's it - you now have a new Perl in /usr/local/bin.
Make sure you have compiler, library source & co. installed on your system (which is not the case with SME!). If you're on SME server go to contribs and look for the "dev tools".
Once this install is working you'll be able to install perl modules using the CPAN package.

Ouch. Sorry to hear that, as the machine I have running 5.4.1 uses a server solution based around 7.3. I guess I won't be buying aSqueezebox2.
That seems rather doom and gloom. It's not that we don't want SS6 to work on RedHat, it's just that RedHat has a broken perl. I spent well over a day on a customer's machine tracking this down. In the end, he upgraded to RedHat 8, quite painlessly, and SS6 worked just fine. So why not look at that as an option?
I'd just like to point out that we run on at least 20 different platforms - and provide the code and build scripts to get SlimServer running on those we don't support out of the box. I dare you to point to one other commercial-esq product that can claim that.
