Hi,

Hard drives are indeed very cheap at the moment but you need something
to put them in and that something also needs to connect to your
network.

The box we have based this on is very similar to the Linkstation but
has better data transfer rates than the Linkstation.

Of course whilst the unit runs Slimserver, there is no reason why the
device can't be used as a normal NAS drive as well. The unit also has a
USB socket and a copy button on the front so most digital cameras can be
just plugged in and the pictures copied straight over.

Whilst the box is Linux based it is going to have to be kept a closed
system. The company who has developed the hardware for us wants to
protect its IP but has worked with us on getting Slimserver working on
it (and believe me it has been hard work). If you want a NAS device
that you can run as a Linux application server either buy a Kuro Box or
hack a Linkstation.

Price wise the Linkstation has lowered the price NAS devices this is
true and it would be great if we could just Telnet into the root of
Linkstation and install Slimserver - but we can't without spending time
hacking box and you get no support for Slimserver. A 120Gb Linkstation
costs about 160 > 180 delivered in the UK so we aren't going to be
that much more expensive plus the hard drives that we are going to use
have been designed for RAID servers and not only are they very quiet
they run very cool.

Anyway all feedback is welcome.
