Yeah, I reckon that NAS is the way to go for a flexible and expandable storage solution - but the advantage of NAS is that it doesn't matter where it's physically sited. The only requirement is a network connection. In terms of what actually runs the SlimServer.. all you really need is a low-power device with enough oomph to comfortably cope with SlimServer with a bit of room left over. If your server doesn't need to be in your living room then you could easily build a cheap PIII / VIA / AMD server with network access and stick it in a cupboard somewhere. If, however, you want the server to sit in your living room then you have two additional requirements - low-noise and good looks. However, there's still no need for your NAS devices to sit in your living room - do you really want a couple of NAS devices sitting in your living room? I'm building a VIA EPIA server in a Hiper Media case. 512MB RAM and smallish HDD to run the OS and that's it. Total cost to me for that is 230 (but only because I had the RAM and HDD lying about). I would personally only look at a NAS-based SlimServer solution if I thought that my music collection wasn't going to grow significantly.. but that's just my opinion and this NAS-based product will be perfect for some. -- dSw _______________________________________________ Discuss mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
