Although they're slightly unusual in their bit-rate, they're
perfectly fine. It's an audiobook and not-at-all unusually
sampled for that genre.
However, yours is a good idea and I'm excited to test it. I've
poked around a little bit and I don't see, anywhere, what the
limitation in this regard is for the slim. Correct me if I'm
wrong - and I'm often wrong - but everything being sent up to
the box itself is being resampled to 320, right? It shouldn't
matter?

No, that's definitely on the list to try, too. Though,
obviously, if the optical stopped working and the analogs are
fine, it looks like a broken unit. I'll find out shortly.
