For about $100 you can get a remote extender device that keeps an IR sensor outside the cabinet and sends IR signals directly to the equipment inside via a wire. I have used one for several years with great results. It also frees you to keep equipment in remote locations (closet etc) to avoid the cost and bulk of racks or cabinets.
