I did not try that approach, but from what I discovered while building the phototransistor circuit, my gut feeling is that it may be quite difficult to reliably detect the LED from outside the case when the SBR is on but stopped - the LED then is rather dim. And if anyone does succeed in that, such an external device could only ever work if the SBR is housed inside a completely dark box or cupboard - any stray ambient light would almost certainly cause unwanted triggering.
