I think the original point of SoftSqueeze was to emulate the hardware. It was a cool idea and nicely done. I don't know if the original opensource developer got anything for it but a thanks. Over the years it has become more complex. Now, I think SoftSqueeze is used more for advertising the hardware (i.e. "give it a whorl and buy the real thing if you like it"). But that's a matter of opinion.
