I have just thought of a solution! For compilation albums, in the 'artist' field, instead of naming the artist 'Duran Duran' (same as on their individual album) you could name them 'Duran Duran*' (an extra * on the end, meaning part of a compilation for example) . as there would be no such albums by an artist called 'Duran Duran*' it would no longer list the individual songs next to any artists who's individual albums you may already have and would hence ony list them once on the compilation album!
