Many times dedicated devices are better then general purpose ones. Using an ipod touch as a remote is nice but you don't get the features of a dedicated device. I like buttons it will be very hard for a touch screen to replace the feel of dedicated buttons.
This is why lots of people including me have a regular cell phone. For making calls. Not for browsing the web etc. There is some allure to having one device that controls everything but in the end its less complicated to have a few dedicated devices that are more focused. I don't regret buying my SC even though gen one ipod touches are on ebay for $180. I have been having a lot of fun hacking my SC.
