The British have many odd expressions, and in this context they would
say that someone was "made redundant". To me, that conjures up a mental
image of crowd full of such people who have been made to keep saying the
same thing over and over again. It's a silly expression.

Thank goodness the world has us Americans to act as proper shepherds
for the language. Otherwise, we'd all be speaking like they do ;-)
