If control via SC Web UI or a Duet Controller is good for you, SqueezeSlave might also be an option (as has been said before). An unobtrusive no-GUI background player that just outputs to your soundcard whatever you let SC stream to it. Works on Linux, Windows, and maybe Mac OS X (I tested only the first two). There's so many options, even UPnP, daap protocol, Apple Bonjour, (using Vortexbox), MP3 streaming, SoftSqueeze, SqueezePlay, and the real good hardware players.
