I've been bitten by enough products over the years where the vendor decided to drop support, stranding users with functioning but unusable hardware. If Slim Devices were to be gobbled up by a huge corporation (hypothetically speaking, sort of), and that corporation decided to completely pull the plug on the product line, dedicated users could keep it alive as long as the hardware continues to function. I wouldn't be surprised if I'm still using my Squeezeboxes (four of them in the household) 10 or 20 years from now.
