Basically, you edit the ".version" files in the Firmware directory.
Here's a post explaining how I edit the squeezebox2.version file to make
SC/SBS tolerate different frimwares for SB2/SB3/Classic (all use the
same squeezebox2 firmware):

Same basic principle should work for other "old" players (Boom,
Transporter, Receiver).
