If you don't have an SB Radio and you don't connect directly to mysqueezebox.com (formerly squeezenetwork.com) then you don't have to upgrade to 7.4.x. You can keep running 7.3.x on the QNAP, and as long as you connect to MySB.com through the QNAP, you don't have to upgrade the SC/SBS on the QNAP or the firmware.
Next time you switch your music source back to the QNAP, let the fw update and leave it there. It is a trade-off, because you'll have to keep the QNAP running all the time.
