Unlike the hardware players SOftsqueeze and Squeezeslave do not have WMA support. On Windows WMA transcoding support is standard and so software players can play WMA streams. On Linux and OSX you need additional app but this is not available on most ReadyNAS models.
I would have expected the "Unable to play" message to be displayed when using Softsqueeze. Are you really using Softqueeze and not Squeezeplay ?
