Just wanted to post an update on this, in case other people have the same problems.
Basically, I got it to work but I have no idea how or why. I deleted the favorite pointing to the laptop URL with spotify+dsbridge, and added it again by typing the url as an internet radio. It still didn't work, though (with the same symptoms as those described above), so in frustration I pressed the play button several times. And suddenly, it started working. And it has kept on working since.
