That doesn't really matter - Squeezebox Server will NOT send a FLAC
stream for /stream.mp3.  It will only send MP3, either from native MP3
files or other  file formats that have been transcoded to MP3.

It would probably be worse streaming FLAC, yes.  But you have the
option to transcode the FLAC to a lower bitrate MP3 by using bitrate
limiting.  You can set it to 320 kbps if you like, or to something
lower that may avoid the dropouts.

No, this isn't necessary!  Squeezebox Server will transcode your FLAC
files to MP3 on-the-fly without any problem.  Just install LAME and
enable bitrate limiting for the player at work.  Your other players at
home will still receive FLAC streams and only the bitrate limited
player(s) will get MP3.
