Some things never change.  Growing up I had the job of occasionally
fixing the TV remote which would fail in the same way.  The difference
was that the emitter was a a small speaker rather than an IR emitter. 
It was easy to see if it was failing because you could hold it up to
your ear and listen as you pushed buttons to see if it was working.

An alternative to the JVC remote would be a Direct TV remote.  I
managed to replicate most funcitons from the remote.  The appropriate
