Odd. I don't know bliss, but I wonder if that disk usage is only a temporary thing while it's creating new copies of the files with embedded art. Did you try doing it on a small subset of files, letting bliss run to completion (including cleaning up any tmp files) and then comparing the filesizes before and after? Even if that were the explanation, that would be awfully inefficient disk usage while processing the files.
