Hi chaps, I managed to prove that both squeezepad & ipeng were similarly affected so it was network or nas drive.
Having removed virtually everything from the network i am starting to think that there is an issue with my combined wireless extender and Ethernet switch, with this bypassed the situation has improved considerably. The search for a resolution also made me more aware of the symptoms. When the latency issue was at it's most obvious, selection of another track would leave the track time counter working for the last track, even though it had stopped playing! The timer would restart for the next track but with no sound, once the sound started the track timer would reset and operate correctly. This happened with both apps. More intensive checking is the next job. Thank you for your comments gaspode & pippin, more later maybe.
