Yes, the current scheme is quite superior to the old one! Perhaps all you would need to do is to use the same design as in the "setting" button at the lower right, maybe slightly larger and with the speaker icons in white. That would maintain consistency of shapes and work well to present a target for one's fingers as well as communicate to new users that the speaker icons are in fact "tappable."
