Regarding controlling the recevier volume from squeezepad: this is something I would like too! I think this should be achieved using a generic solution involving middleware. Eventghost comes to mind here. Controlling the volume from eventghost is no problem at all, depending on the hardware involved. I for instance have a serial cable between the pc and my Marantz receiver but a million other ways are possible. The only thing needed is the ability for Eventghost to "capture" the volume-up and volume-down events coming from Squeezepad. This could be achieved in many ways, e.g. Squeezepad sending UDP-packets for each and every event happening in the application. Some other way might be that eventghost listens to the network communication that is going on between Squeezepad anyway. Not sure if that's possible
