In the meantime I had a look at the iTunes COM interface, and can safely say that it is pre- Jurassic; (it looks like it has not been touched since decades); and to be specific it does support COM commands to the player, but only to the default local player on the PC where iTunes is itself running; but it does not have an interface for enumerating remote players (such as Airport players) and thus nor does it have an interface for controlling those players.
