It depends, I agree that some logic currently handled by
mysqueezebox.com should ideally be handled on the local network of each
user, but I don't think it has to be in a separate server it can also be
on the playback device itself.

Regarding local vs central server it's also important to note that if
the software isn't maintained it doesn't matter if it's installed on a
local computer or on a central computer in the cloud. It's easy to think
that you will have full control if you have it on a local computer but
in reality it will often work better if it's on a central cloud server
as long as you can ensure the reliability. Normal people don't like to
upgrade software on a computer constantly to keep a system working, they
would rather prefer that it's handled by someone else. On top of this
some services wouldn't be possible to integrate without mysqueezebox.com
because the streaming providers sometimes doesn't allow you to include
code that access their API's in an open source software because they
only want the API to be visible to partners which have singed a NDA.

I know a lot of people blame mysqueezebox.com for a lot of issues but in
my opinion it's a lot better that Logitech have been able to silently
push out a bug correction on mysqueezebox.com when some streaming
service changes something than that I would have to upgrade the
Squeezebox firmware or LMS software every time this happens. The reason
we think a solution based on a central service is bad is because
Logitech haven't been able to ensure its reliability.
