John This all sounds very promising - a series of pragmatic steps to get us to an actual product. I'm not really qualified to suggest changes for Gen0.5, since this is clearly aimed at a select few developers. So without wishing to take this specific discussion off the tracks, can I air a thought about future generations? One opportunity I see for this project is to feed the hobbyist market - people who don't necessarily want a finished boxed product but who might like to build SB functionality into other projects. Let me say that I'm not convinced how big this niche might be, but, for example, miniDSP seem to be doing quite well out of selling hobbyist modules as well as boxed products. I'm currently putting together a miniDSP box and the housing I'm using has room (and even a front panel cutout) to suit my gutted SB2 board and its VFD panel. So it occurred to me that an interface to the traditional VFD panels might be useful. Yes, I know that these panels aren't used any more, and yes, I know that people who disassemble SB2/3 units to use in projects is really a small sub-niche of the hobbyist niche. BUT it did make me wonder whether adding a VFD interface would allow us to also target this board at people repairing (or dare I say it) upgrading existing products that use these displays (including the Transporter!). Are future generations of the board going to be more capable (sample rates, USB out) and of sufficient quality (DAC, power supply) that they could legitimately be considered upgrades, even compared to the Transporter? So if we made boards with the same form factor as the SB2 motherboard and the SB3 motherboard (I'm sure the Transporter would have room for almost any form factor), could they be used to repair/upgrade these older products, and retain the familiar VFD+remote functionality that many prefer to the newer Touch interface. Just a bit of idle speculation really, triggered by the thought that I would have liked to build a Gen1 board into my own project and a VFD interface would have been really useful. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97881 _______________________________________________ discuss mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
