To support online services there have to be a business behind the
activity, it will never work in a community project due to requirements
for NDAs, business agreements and similar things from service providers.


Except for this, supporting online services works without a central
server as long as you don't release the code interacting with the
streaming service as open source. 

However, I personally still think a central server like mysqueezebox.com
is the easiest way to handle it if you like to support many different
types of streaming hardware. The idea of a central server isn't bad if
you can ensure its availability.

I wouldn't assume that SWAMP won't be able to use streaming services
yet. If  someone eventually turns SWAMP into a business (instead of a
DIY kit) this could happen, but you are right that it will probably
require som time so it's maybe not that likely to happen already 2013.
