Apple TV can only work at 16 bit 48kbit/s. So all 'standard' CD red book music will be transcoded, IMHO transcoded very crudely. Apple Airport Express works at 16 bit 44.14kbit/s, therefore no transcoding required. Airplay works at 16 bit 44.14kbit/s so no transcoding for the wifi bit, although no error recovery.
