Excellent news that balanced is in.

If packaging the XLR sockets is a significant problem, would 1/4" TRS
jacks be any easier? (I personally prefer XLR, but TRS jacks are also
widely used for balanced). I suppose you could even go completely
non-standard and use 3.5mm TRS jacks if space is really tight. Another
possibility could be a 9-way D-sub with a break-out cable, as used on
some pro-level soundcards.
