If I understand correctly, I think the automated factory reset/restore scenarios above would require software that could only run after the OS has booted. This does little good if the system is in a state where it will not boot.
With the Touch, my understanding is that the reboot and the factory reset, as well as and some of the recovery options, were made possible by including a separate programmable microcontroller that was independent of the main system.
