I think we need to avoid getting carried away with complex engineering solutions here.....
Wandboard boots entirely from the sd card - the file system kernel and uboot are on this. So if there is a serious problem the card can be removed and reprogrammed externally. Touch was a device designed for lowest cost and needed to take measures to make support easy and avoid bricking it at all costs as the unbrick process was complex. For our device we have less of a problem with bricking. The initial images will use the filesystem as a normal linux machine, so to recover to the original state will require reflashing the card.
