If Sonos and Olive do not have the flexibility of Squeezebox+LMS, how
are they filling the gap?

A perfectly reasonable wish. But not one that fits with the fundamental
Squeezebox model - that of a thin client player streaming its data from
a central server. (The Touch was a bit of a schizoid device and muddied
the waters. I for one think that including TinySBS on the Touch was a
mistake, indicative of Logitech's fundamental lack of understanding of
the Slim Devices vision).

Let's recap: if Logitech hadn't pulled out of this business, The
SWAMP/CSP probably would not have been developed. It's a replacement for
the Logiech hardware players, which (with the exception of Touch) were
not self-contained.

I believe I was the first person to request balanced output, but plenty
of others have supported that wish. Based on John's claims for how good
the DAC is going to be, the CSP isn't just a SB Classic/Touch
replacement, it's going to be good enough (as a player) to be a
Transporter replacement (albeit without the digital inputs). And as such
it deserves - nay, *requires* - balanced outputs.

That's an easy one. It's for the sort of person who would have bought SB
Classic/Touch/Transporter to connect to their central LMS.
(MySqueezebox.com is going to disappear sooner or later, so that's not
really relevant).

If the guys developing it can include enough flexibility that it can
also run LMS and have an attached hard drive, so much the better. If
this does come to pass, it can then become the self-contained device you
want. But it absolutely must not ever be *only* such a self-contained
device.
