I don't recall that happening on mine. Does the same thing happen with other audio on the desire? Might be worth loading a few tunes on a memory card and trying the stock player to see if it's SqueezePlayer or the phone producing the noise.
What amp are you using. Your description of "receiver" reminds me of a previous AV Receiver I owned, if you used an input that also had an associated digital input the receiver would try and lock on to the digital input 1st so you'd often get a pop when it switched to the analogue signal. The receiver concerned had some specific analogue only inputs that didn't do that, just a thought.
