Hi John and thanks for the reply. 

I remembered that there were problems with the optical S/PDIF on the
early boards so went for the quad version anyway - just in case. 

I was concerned about scanning music files on LMS being slow because of
disc I/O being compromised by a slow USB connection but that appears not
to be the case. You mention a SATA to eSATA adapter - do you mean a
simple cable adapter or something else?
