There are some people that equate "gold" connectors with "high end". If they don't see a gold connector they will assume the device is "cheap" and no good. If I don't use gold connectors I don't a lot of people complaining it's not gold. My personal preference is for the more robust connector, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't going to have an uprising by not using gold connectors.
