You can start by audition suitable DAC's and still use the SB3 in the interim as a transport (its not broken yet is it ?) .
The bulk of your music is probabaly bog standard 16/44.1 anyway . Why you try difference sources try to level match them , note different sources have different volume keeping the volume knob in the same spot is not level matching . When you compare the a squeezebox to a CD player keep volume at 100% and turn of smartgain .
