I think the problem is that people don't buy a whole music system just for the controller App - at least not if they don't even have the App, yet, and it costs money.
And everybody who's already using a Squeezebox and an iPad and is even remotely willing to spend money on an App will already have SqueezePad or iPeng or even both so no new users coming around. I was in a similar situation 18 months ago when I did iPeng 7 and decided to sell it as a new App. It gained me a lot of negative feedback from users because it's o-so-greedy to charge for an update after only handing out free updates for three years. To be fair: there was also a huge amount of support from other users who _did_ actually recognize the fact that this was a move that gained them extended support and who were happy to see ongoing development on the Squeezebox platform but still.... initially you've got these bad reviews on the App Store... But with iPeng 7 this was a bit easier than for SqueezePad because iPeng (the iPhone version) had been around for much longer, and it was really a complete rewrite and new UI and also it became a universal App from two separate ones. Still, iPeng7/8 only has a fraction of the users the old iPeng versions had and this fact now allows me to at least add moderate new features (and the fact that I have a few OEM customers for iPeng) since I have a modern code base (easier to maintain) and can still hope to lure some users to switch but without that.... only new users.... hard.... That's the downside of the "App Economy". Users got used to getting free updates forever and to be able to install stuff on as many devices as they like but a lot of that is based on initial growth and new users paying for the ongoing development. Take that growth away as in the Squeezebox world and it quickly stops being viable. --- learn more about iPeng, the iPhone and iPad remote for the Squeezebox and Logitech UE Smart Radio as well as iPeng Party, the free Party-App, at penguinlovesmusic.com *New: iPeng 8, the Universal App for iOS 7 and iOS 8* ------------------------------------------------------------------------ pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80553 _______________________________________________ discuss mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
