Can't speak for bluegaspode but that's usually not easily done.
In iPeng's case: I would not open source the code of the old iPeng
because it's simply too bad. The App was developed under iOS 2.0 and
since then the OS has changed a lot. It would be a tremendous amount of
work to even get it to a standard where one could maintain it as an open
source software.

"Open source" alone doesn't solve any maintenance issues. There's still
work that needs to be done and if it's more than one developer working
on it and not the original developer the work gets more, not less. Just
look at the progress the Open Source Squeezebox Apps have made on
Android compared to the commercial ones. Squeezer is OK but far away
from OrangeSqueeze or SqueezeControl, even SqueezeCommander which hasn't
seen an update in three years beats it dead in the water.

No, they don't. It's another discontinued product. There are some left
in sales channels but so are leftover Squeezeboxes.
There are 3rd party solutions coming up which are Squeezebox compatible
but right now they mainly cater toward existing Squeezebox users who
need additional players. This helps getting hardware sales but doesn't
add new App users.

That's what I meant with a system. You need to install a server and use
the App, that's a "System" then which competes with iTunes (free,
preinstalled), Airfoil and a dozen other systems deeper integrated and
more used by iOS users. It's hard to communicate the merits of your
paid-for App to non-Squeezebox users who have never seen that (and are
not familiar with the Squeezebox menu structure, which can be weird in
the eyes of people not used to it).

It may find its users but simple is different. This means work.
