The main problem with the BBC's tinned response is that while everyone
making internet radios and programming software aggregators -wishes- to
use the HLS streams, only one hardware manufacturer to date is capable
of doing so. The rest are still selling hardware that cannot be
retrofitted to accommodate the BBC's decision on what constitutes the
current state of technology.

There is at least one other European broadcaster whose programming I
listen to, that provides their streams in HLS for iPhone, but WMA for
wifi receivers. WMA is apparently still very viable despite BBC's
protests to the contrary.
