IIRC BBC chased away (legally) any non BBC app which play iPlayer
programs or even app which just deliver URLs for another media player to
play.

The BBC iPlayer app can also play TV which is its main use. TV programs
are BBC main source of revenue and so there may be issues/rights etc
about TV program distributors in Rest-of-World. IIRC last year BBC used
to allow non UK to pay to get TV but this has now stopped. Also BBC is
now actively stopping non UK users who have been using VPN to get BBC TV
programs. Also I thought I heard that BBC may change satellite coverage
so that footprint will be more UK focussed and less overspill over
Europe which would upset expats in the Algarve.

BBC's strategy is not clear - I hope there is one.

BBC will be moving all online media to DASH replacing Flash, HLS and
HDS. DASH has new encryption and securioy mecahsiusm. Other DASH
faciities include local ad insertion so perhaps BBC may become
commercial outside UK.

Anyhow this is OT and belongs in the iPlayer thread..
