Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, never had any errors with local streaming. And I'm using Devolo Homeplug, not wireless. Network Diagnostics does show the ISP traffic light turn from green to red sometimes, and then back to green in a short or long time (never any need to reboot router/modem).
ShairTunes seems to be working for playing local music on my iPad to my Squeezebox. I had a few problems, but I think they were my own misunderstanding. Doesn't seem to work with the BBC iPlayer Radio app on the iPad, though, as I don't think that allows Airplay and so does not allow ShairTunes. Just for the record, using iPlayer Radio on iPad got me a half-hour program with no dropouts.
