I thought I would report back as to what I found so far...My header
question "what to address first?" should have been obvious to me - user
error (it seems). It's interesting how we as experienced users gain so
much experience and knowledge that we assume it will be a straight
forward process for others. Especially when we are tecnically inclined,
and they are not as much.

The first time I went over I set the sb up, had him create a mysb
account, and left with it working. I visited the next day and it indeed
needed a reset. The following day I heard from him that it "wouldn't
play", so I feared another reset, which would be to often to keep him
interested, so I asked the forum.

I went over there the other day and it indeed was working, no reset
needed, although there was a menu item I had never seen "return to
setup" which I followed, only to have it run through the whole setup
again. Since we were already setup, I power cycled the controller. There
also was an update available via "check for updates", I assume for the
receiver.

I pinged everything. I used my phone wifi monitor app to identify one
other network nearby (remote area) on the same channel, about the same
strength, and other channels available. I forgot to change it, but
will.

I checked the receiver wifi signal strength, it varied between 38% and
50%, not bad, but could be better. He has another phone jack (DSL) in a
more central location if need be. We could also upgrade the modem. He
has claimed intermittent internet outage and we tend to blame the dsl
provider, but in fact, it could be something that we can address, as you
all have advised.

I addressed new to sb user error by rearranging the controller menu to
have now playing, power on/off, favorites, radio, then my music (emplty
right now) at the top, and taught him the "when in doubt" press and hold
the back key to return to the main menu.

It's funny, I thought a duet would be perfect for him, with indoor and
outdoor listening, but when I went to show him something on the
controller, he grabbed his reading glasses, and I thought, "oh, maybe a
touch would have been better" :)

A couple days later he is still using and enjoying it.

Moving forward - change wireless channel, install lms, share a few flac
files with him to get started, start him ripping, etc, and all of the
other wonderful things lms can give you, the plugins, RP flac,
phone/tablet app control, etc. Sometimes you can take them for granted
until you are using a mysb only system, and you said "we can set this up
for you"....oh, no LMS...)

Thanks to all for your insight, I'll post back if this sb utopia is soon
shattered.

Jim
