A few years ago I briefly experimented with Max2Play and concluded that it was trying to cover too many bases and as a result required a fair bit of configuration effort. So for the time being I stuck with Vortexbox running on an old Acer Revo.
When I tried piCorePlayer on a RPi3 a couple of years back it was a breeze to set up and the Vortexbox got retired. PCP seems specifically aimed at the Squeezebox ecosystem and does it very well.
