True, but some of the best conversations I've ever had have consisted
mainly of digressions.

I think their existing music collection is almost entirely vinyl,
probably with a few CDs and cassettes. They had a nice component system,
circa 1980 or so, which was still working until a few years ago. Having
been out of the audio marketplace for many years, they asked for some
advice on acquiring a new system, when they're ready to make that
investment. By now, they've probably realized that asking me for advice
was a foolish mistake.

Right now, my focus is on getting them some very minimal gear so they
can get experience with online music. I hope that by the time they've
dealt with some pressing house maintenance issues and feel okay about
spending some money on toys, they will have more knowledge about how
things work these days. And they will be better equipped to make choices
that seem bewildering right now.

My guess is that they will be able to find almost all the music they
want on Spotify or some other service, and Sonos may well be a good
choice for them. That remains to be seen. I know absolutely nothing
about Volumio; what should I know?

I don't think I ever encountered an LP intended for consumer use that
had lock grooves. There were good reasons for them in broadcast
settings, especially before the days of tape cartridges. Which is also
well before my time, but I've seen some of the old transcription discs
of national commercials or Public Service Announcements. It would have
been a great relief to know that it wouldn't keep going to the next
track, if the operator was slow taking it off the air.
